It’s hard to put a number on how many people will suffer from back pain in their lives. The WHO estimates that in 2020, 619 million people globally suffered from lower back pain and expects that number to rise to 819 million by 2050 as the population ages. Sadly, a large proportion of those people will continue to suffer from it for the rest of their lives.

Getting expert treatment and advice in the early stages of a back injury is crucial for preventing you from becoming a permanent sufferer. We can’t fix all back pain, some maybe, but not all. However, almost all back pain can be improved with the right therapy and advice, and that’s our speciality.

Age, weight, height, genetics, sneezing, accidents, doing something stupid in the gym, the list is seemingly endless.

Our spines are the very centre of our being, and everything below the head has its nerve supply from the spine.

Lots. This is why expert assessment, diagnosis and treatment are essential.

Yes, it’s rare that it doesn’t.

Yes, especially in the early stages, as it’s exceptional for helping with high levels of pain.

If it’s really bad, go to the hospital or see your doctor. Osteopathy and Physiotherapy are fantastic choices and a must in severe cases, and extremely worthwhile in more minor cases. Our therapy options almost always complement these other therapies and should be considered as part of your recovery process.

In most cases, medication in the early stages of a back injury is very useful. It’ll aid with your recovery, and help you live a relatively normal life during the recovery process.

Yes. However, it’s important to remember that core stability training is more than just training your abs. It’s essential to train the muscles that support the spine itself and train your nervous system’s ability to control those muscles. A very good personal trainer would be a good choice, as would advice from a Physiotherapist or Osteopath.

Most people’s jobs are a significant contributor to their back pain, if not the actual cause. Dealing with this through your employers can sometimes be challenging, especially if you have suffered from back pain in the past. However, it’s the law that they must investigate and improve your working conditions accordingly, but this can only happen if you tell them. It doesn’t matter how minor the problem is; you’ll be the only one losing out until you do.

It’s probably worth looking at your bed. Your sleeping position and the type of mattress you have suit that sleeping position is very important. Having a firm bed is a bit of a myth, especially if you’re a side sleeper. If you’re a front sleeper, this is almost universally considered to be bad unless you’re a baby or a cat.

Usually.

It can be improved, maybe even fixed. It takes a bit of effort and will require the right advice, but taking up activities that exercise and prioritise your posture is an easy way to get started.
